Yankees’ Rachel Balkovec Becomes the First Manager of a Female in the Minor Leagues.

New York – The New York Yankees are promoting Rachel Balkovec to manager of the Low A Tampa Tarpons, making her the first woman to lead an organization that is part of Major League Baseball, according to two people who are familiar with the development.

Balkovec was hired by the Yankees as an assistant hitting coach for minor leagues in the year 2019.

The individuals spoke with The Associated Press on Sunday evening under the condition of anonymity since the club had not announced the promotion.

The 34-year old Balkovec joined the Yankees team as a hitting coach in the year 2019 which made her the first woman to hold this position who is full-time within affiliated baseball. Her first job was as a professional player as a member of the St. Louis Cardinals as an minor league strength and conditioning coach in 2012.

Rachel  Balkovec is an ex-softball catcher who played at Creighton University and the University of New Mexico and the University of New Mexico, was promoted to her position with the Cardinals and the Houston Astros in 2016. The Astros hired her for the position of Latin American strength and conditioning coordinator, a job in which she was able to learn Spanish as well as later becoming Strength and Conditioning coach for the Double-A Corpus Christi.

Then she resigned from the sport in the summer of 2018 to pursue a master’s in Vrije University in the Netherlands in which she was also a part of the nation’s softball and baseball national teams. Then, she was employed by Driveline Baseball, a data-driven baseball facility that has trained many major league players, before being appointed as a coach by New York.

“I see my journey as an asset,” she told The Associated Press in the year 2019. “I needed to accomplish more than my male equivalent, but I appreciate it because I’m better prepared for any challenges that I may face.”

Balkovec’s promotions were first announced in The Athletic.
